Packages for La Chorcha Lodge
These packages were designed to help you enjoy your stay at Copan and experience some of the activities offered in the area without having to worry about logistics. All activities are led by a bilingual guide. For the Natural History Tours (Packages #3 & #4) a flora and fauna checklist will be provided. For each package the client will receive a detailed itinerary.
Package #1
This package was designed for the visitor who wants to get a taste of the variety of activities that Copan has to offer. Included in this package is a guided tour at the famous Copan Ruins archaeological site which has been likened to the “Paris of the Mayan World”. During the arts and crafts tour you will visit a small wood carving shop that makes various products for local shops. At the jade and rock shop you will have the chance to do some hands on carving. An adventurous day tour to the El Gobiado Nature Reserve will give you a taste of the area’s last remaining rain forest. Here you will have a short horse back ride, a hike into the rain forest, lunch at a real hacienda and an optional swim in a natural pool.

Package #3 – Natural History of Copan I
These tours were designed keeping the Naturalist in mind. Copan sits on a biological divide between the Caribbean and Pacific slopes and contains a wide range of habitats and elevations. All these factors combined make the area a haven for flora and fauna and for those who enjoy nature, whether it be birds, butterflies and flora in general. For each day tour we have the option to focus on the fields that interest you the most. Or we can enjoy them all! The bird watching is good nearly all year long with the breeding season occurring from Feb. to June. The best season for wild butterflies is from June to December. The best months for blooming orchids are Jan. to April and July to August.
The shorter tour offers three outings into different areas. The La Laguna route takes us through scrub, semi-deciduous woodland and into a humid pine/oak forest. This diversity of habitats often produces 75 bird species or more. A couple highlights include the Elegant Euphonia, Emerald Toucanet and Collared Trogon. There is also a nice variety of native orchids, both epiphytic and terrestrials. We often find Morpho, Longwing, Swallowtail and Sulphur butterflies in abundance. The day tour to the El Gobiado Nature Reserve focuses on the areas` last lowland rain forest where there is an abundance of north coast flora and fauna. At times we encounter army ant swarms which attract a plethora of birds. The site has Toucans, Woodcreepers, Trogons and even Howler Monkeys. The area is also plentiful with wild orchids and butterflies. The Miramundo highlands route passes through a drier pine/oak forest which harbors different elements of flora and fauna. Here we find the small, yellow passion flower that was discovered in Honduras in the 1980`s. The tour finishes at a shaded coffee farm where we can hike through some mid-elevation rainforest.

Package #4 – Natural History of Copan II
This package is identical to the first natural history tour, but differs in that it includes a visit to a mountain top containing cloud forest. Cloud forests occur throughout Honduras, but are scarce in the Copan area. This site contains floral and faunal elements typical of highlands and often has a larger variety of flowering shrubs which in turn attract some great hummingbirds. A few special hummers here include the Emerald-chinned, Wine-throated and Stripe-tailed Hummingbird as well as the Green-throated Mountain-Gem. At times we are lucky enough to find the Highland Guan.
